GISS: DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY The Gulf Islands Board of School Trustees prohibits the possession, consumption or use of illicit or non-medical drugs, alcoholic beverages, or other intoxicating substances, including misused prescription drugs, by any student while at school or any school-sponsored activity, Principles: • The school will respect all aspects of the School Board Policy on Drug and Alcohol use. • Drugs and alcohol adversely affect the learning environment. • The school views most seriously the consumption, possession, trafficking or direct association with drugs and alcohol. • The safety of all persons is of paramount importance. Process: • Students will be informed at the beginning of each school year of the school policy involving drugs and alcohol. • The Principal (and/or designate) will be responsible for assessing a student who is suspected of being involved with drugs/alcohol. • Students involved with drugs and/or alcohol will normally be required to complete an educational unit on substance abuse. Any incident may result in suspension. • Any incident involving alcohol or other drugs may result in suspension, contact with the RCMP, and/or contact with Community Services Drug and Alcohol outreach.
